The Brush Letter Practice Guide

Practice Your Way to Beautiful Brushy Letters

Create words on paper as beautifully as you imagine.

You want the words you write to look as beautiful as you imagine. Dedicating a small amount of time each day can help. This brush letter practice guide gives you the space and structure for your practice sessions. And practice makes beautiful.

Create a routine so you can consistently practice your brush lettering.

If you commit to practice with my recommended schedule, you’ll be a pro in just 45 days! After completing my set of practice sheets, you’ll be so much more confident in the way you letter. Impress your friends and family with your holiday cards, add personality to your scrapbooks and art journals, and add brush lettering to your graphic design repertoire.

See your own improvement quickly by practicing daily.

People are always asking me how I developed my lettering skills. The answer: It’s all about the dedicated time to practice. It’s not just about learning the latest greatest technique or what the best tools are. Progress comes from getting comfy with your brush and paper and doing the work.

Your letters will flow easily and gracefully by building up muscle memory.

This structured method for practicing helped me improve my brush lettering in less than a year. Here’s an overview of the method:

  • Start BIG. Remember when you were in pre-school and you were first learning how to write? Remember that ginormous pencil they gave you and lined paper that only fit a few lines of words per page? We’re starting there. If you haven’t used a brush for lettering before, it’s a totally foreign object compared to using a regular pen. We’ve got to get those arm muscles ready and that brush control steady!
  • What are we actually drawing first? Basic shapes. Lines, U’s, Circles. And I’ve created tracing sheets to help you.
  • Next up is lowercase letters in a jumbo scale. It’ll feel funny at first. Like, how in the world will I eventually address envelopes this way? Trust the process. Big first. Then we go smaller.
  • After you’re comfortable and loving how your letters look in jumbo size, we’ll go to our regular sized practice sheets. I have both basic shapes and lowercase letters for you here too. Practice makes better, so stick with it!

Olivia provides you with some awesome practice sheets. The most crucial I found are the basic shapes that she includes in the guide. It gives you ways to learn how to control the brush and learn the basic “moves” you have to make the letters when you get to them in the guide. This is how you build your technique and it requires patience.

I can’t believe my progress from nothing to something I’m happy to share in the space of two hours. I totally think [Olivia’s] on to something with this back to basics ‘big letters’ technique.
